NORWAY’s infrastructure manager Bane Nor has awarded contracts worth a total of NKr 1.8bn ($US 222m) to Alstom to equip the country’s entire mainline train fleet of 467 trains of 55 different types with ERTMS and maintain it for up to 25 years.

Bane Nor negotiated the delivery of on-board equipment on behalf of 14 Norwegian vehicle owners and a contract was signed with Alstom to equip 274 trains, with the largest contract for onboard equipment worth NKr 665m.
Bane Nor also signed three contracts with Alstom comprising:
• a NKr 300m general-application contract covering the development and testing of onboard equipment and installation in three test trains
• a NKr 200m specific application contact for the conversion of Bane Nor’s maintenance machines, and
• a NKr 50m contract to coordinate the onboard equipment of trains with the commissioning of ERTMS on individual lines to ensure sufficient trains are available.

Alstom will supply its Atlas ERTMS equipment which includes a dual system to allow trains to operate on Norway’s ATC-2 legacy signalling as well lines equipped with ETCS Level 2 while sharing some onboard equipment such as computers and balise antennae.

The work will be carried out in Norway, mainly at Bane Nor’s workshops in Grorud and Marienborg. Work on the first trains is due to completed in late 2021 in the time for the launch of the first ERTMS-equipped line, with all trains fitted with ERTMS by 2026.
