Alstom Starts Production of Driverless Trainsets for Chennai Metro Phase II

India: Alstom has started the production of its Metropolis trainsets for the Chennai Metro Phase II at its manufacturing facility in Sricity.

Alstom will deliver 36 three-car metro trainsets that have a maximum operating speed of 80km/h. The trains will run on the 26km corridor – a segment of Phase II – that links Poonamallee Bypass to Light House via 28 stations, of which 18 are elevated and 10 are under ground.

The start of production was commemorated with a ceremony led by leaders from Chennai Metro Rail Ltd and Alstom India.

This project is valued at EUR 124 million and includes training the personnel of Chennai Metro to operate and maintain the trainsets.

The electric trainsets will run on 25kV for optimal energy efficiency.

M.A. Siddique, I.A.S., Managing Director of CMRL, said:

It not only boosts the economy by improving connectivity but also champions sustainable mobility by reducing emissions and de-congesting roads. CMRL will be introducing driverless trains in Phase II. These modern trains prioritise safety and passenger comfort, further elevating the commuting experience. We are happy that our first set of driverless trains will be manufactured near Chennai by Alstom. We look forward to operating these technologically advanced trains on the Phase II network by end of 2025, marking a significant milestone for the city’s transportation infrastructure.”

Each metro train can accommodate up to 1000 passengers and is equipped with wide internal gangways to make passenger flow as efficient as possible. The trains are air-conditioned to improve comfort. Two-thirds of a car will be designated as a ‘ladies’ section’ though it appears to be open to men as well as this section doubles up as the space for differently abled passengers. For example, it features distinctly coloured grab handles at a lower height to ensure easy access.

Perch seats are a space-efficient way to bring support for standing passengers. These trains are the first in India to have such seats. CCTV cameras are fitted on board for security.

The trains are fitted with obstacle and detrainment detectors and also have regenerative braking for better energy efficiency.

The trains feature GoA 4 driverless systems.

Alstom has also manufactured and delivered 208 metro cars for the 54km of the first phase and extension of Corridor I from the city’s airport to Wimco Nagar and Corridor II from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount.

Furthermore, Alstom has successfully designed, tested and commissioned the track works covering 45km of Corridors I & II for the Chennai Metro.
