Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM) has awarded a framework agreement to Hitachi Rail to manufacture the new trains for the Milan Metro.

The agreement is valued at 368 million EUR and includes the supply of 46 new metro trains, 21 of which have already been committed in the first part of the agreement for line M1.

The vehicles will be manufactured in the Italian Hitachi Rail plants in Naples and Reggio Calabria, with the first new trains scheduled to enter service on the Milan Metro in spring 2024.

This investment is part of ATM’s plan to improve the sustainability of the city’s public transport system while implementing more advanced technologies.

The new trains will help renovate Milan’s public transport network and will provide passengers with more modern, accessible and comfortable trains

Each train will be made up of six aluminium cars, totalling 106.5 metres in length, and will be able to reach a maximum speed of 90 kilometres per hour.

The new metro trains will have a fully accessible design with an uninterrupted view throughout and a surveillance system providing real time video to the control room to improve security.

They will also be equipped with air conditioning and the external sides have been designed to be resistant to vandalism.

Meanwhile, their lower noise levels will help deliver a comfortable passenger experience.
