Chicago Metra Awards Contract to Renovate Homewood Station

Metra has awarded a 14.5 million USD contract to IHC Construction of Elgin to renovate Homewood Station along the Metra Electric Line and Amtrak Midwest route in Chicago.

The work will include constructing a new accessible east headhouse and a renovated platform with windbreaks and a waiting room.

New drainage, ventilation, lighting and interior finishes will also be installed in the existing 1911 tunnel, and the elevator that connects the tunnel to the platform will be replaced.

Metra Homewood StationThe Metra contract was awarded to IHC Construction of Elgin, which committed to subcontract 30 percent of the work to DBE firms

The contract also includes the construction of a new Pace bus facility, including dedicated lanes, a covered waiting area and driver relief facilities.

Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski said:

“This project represents a significant upgrade to the Homewood Station and its pedestrian tunnel. It will not only create a more welcoming, more accessible station and tunnel for Metra and Amtrak customers, but also a more welcoming gateway for Homewood’s downtown retail district and residential areas.”

The upcoming work is part of the Metra Electric Community Initiative, which will renovate 13 stations on the Metra Electric Line. This project follows a significant investment by Amtrak to help renovate the shared facility.

Construction is scheduled to begin next spring and will take around 24 months.
