DB Netz has commissioned STRABAG Rail to upgrade the Berlin-Köpenick rail station to handle regional rail traffic via two new tracks.

The station in south-east Berlin is a key component of the city’s overall transport strategy and part of an extensive project to modernise the west-east corridor from Berlin to the Polish border near Frankfurt (Oder).

When the modernisation is completed, in 2027, the railway line will enable shorter travel times between Magdeburg, Potsdam, Berlin and Frankfurt, with trains able to travel at maximum speeds of 160 kilometres an hour.

In a contract valued at 154 million EUR (149.3m USD) the modernisation works is being led by STRABAG Rail, supported by STRABAG AG, STRABAG Fahrleitungen and ZÜBLIN Stahlbau.

The companies will begin construction at the station next spring. A section of track approximately 3 kilometres in length will also be renewed, running largely parallel to the S-Bahn line.

Besides the two new tracks for regional rail traffic, a passing loop will provide a better connection between Berlin’s outer ring and the west-east corridor.

Furthermore, in addition to the existing island platform – designed only for S-Bahn traffic – a new 220 metre long regional service platform will also be built. This will have three new entrances – two of which will be barrier free.

The upgrade project also includes the renewal and upgrade of five railway bridges, modernisation of the overhead lines, the construction of supporting structures and 18,000 square metres of noise barriers over a length of approximately 4 kilometres.
