The president of the Spanish rail infrastructure manager Adif and Adif AV presented the new strategy and its aim to promote multimodal transport, shared mobility and digitalisation of stations.

Adif’s plan divides railway stations into five categories in order to make changes based on their use and location:

  • “Insignia” – stations considered ‘transport nerve centres’ with high commercial and cultural use
  • “Foro” – stations for hosting business and commercial services
  • “Ágora” – stations with high cultural interest as a result of their location or architecture
  • “Urbana” – stations in metropolitan areas with high usage
  • “Lanzadera” – stations with little traffic with an aim to connect them with cities

Part of this transformation is through Adif’s Ecomilla project.

María Dominguez, explained:

“{The Ecomilla project is} a transversal initiative for the creation of a space destined to promote sustainable urban multimodality, so that the traveller’s route from the station to the destination point (or from the origin to the station) in the first and last mile is carried out in an energy-efficient means of transport with low CO2 emissions.”

The Ecomilla project has designed sustainable mobility spaces in its railways stations that are targeted at zero-emission and shared vehicles. Furthermore, the stations will be equipped with renewable fast-charging points and secure parking for bikes and scooters. Adif’s intention is to encourage multimodality in the form of car-sharing, bike-sharing and scooter-sharing, so journeys produce low CO2 emissions from start to finish.

Adif’s strategy also involves the digitalisation of railway stations as part of its e.futura programme, with the goal of creating smart stations and integrating them as smart places. The company has collaborated with Red.es and city councils to install IoT (Internet of Things) nodes within stations. During her talk titled “Intelligent infrastructures for a safer, connected and intermodal mobility,” Dominguez highlighted that this is already in progress at stations in Seville, Málaga, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Terrassa, Móstoles, Valencia and A Coruña and Vigo.

In 2019, Adif published its strategic plan to increase its energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint by 86% by 2030. The infrastructure manager’s newest strategy to transform its stations is part of its ongoing commitment within the rail industry to decarbonise transport.
