Network Rail is continuing major railway upgrades between Manchester and Stalybridge as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU).

This section of the upgrade project will support faster, more frequent trains between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield.

Over the next few months Network Rail will install new trackside columns ready for future electric wiring, renew one mile of track and upgrade the signalling equipment.

In addition, two bridges in Ashton-under-Lyne will be raised in order to allow electric wiring to pass beneath them.

In order to safely carry out the work, sections of the railway will need to be closed over weekends in February, March, April and May. Further work is scheduled for later in the year.

While works is underway replacement buses and diversions will be put in place.
