Auckland Transport Awards Train Contract to CAF

New Zealand: Auckland Transport has awarded a contract for 23 electric trains to CAF.

The contract is worth over 130 million euros and covers the maintenance of the trains until 2025. The contract also includes an option to call up to five further units.

Auckland Transport first entered into an agreement with CAF in 2011, when it ordered 57 electric trains as well as their maintenance for a period of twelve years. In 2017 it bought a further 15 units. All of these 72 trains are now in revenue service in Auckland.

The new units will be similar to the ones Auckland Transport has previously purchased. They will be three-car EMUs comprising two cabbed end motor cars and one intermediate trailer car. Each EMU will have a capacity of 380 passengers. There will be two passenger doors per side and the intermediate car will be low-floor to make it accessible.

CAF incorporated its subsidiary in Australia in 2010. Since then, it has received a good number of projects on the continent, such as for the Parramatta Light Rail project in New South Wales.
