Trains return to tractor crash line

TRAINS are running again between Ely and Peterborough after the collision between a train and a tractor at Kisby level crossing near March last week.

Both the train and tractor driver received minor injuries, but Network Rail said ‘significant’ damage was caused to the railway when the train’s locomotive collided with the tractor at about 09.10 on 19 August. The force of the impact was enough to derail three wagons, damaging the crossing itself as well as 1500m of track and signalling equipment.

Kisby is a user-worked private crossing between March and Whittlesea, and is equipped with a telephone to the signaller.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has been gathering data from the scene as part of its inquiry.

Network Rail’s infrastructure director for Anglia Simon Milburn said: ‘We’ve worked solidly for the last four days to carry out the repairs as quickly as possible and minimise disruption this incident has caused.

‘I’d like to thank passengers for their patience while we complete these works and we are sorry for the disruption it has caused.’
