Euston Station First in UK to Make Announcements in British Sign Language

Euston Station in London has become the first in the country to provide passenger information in British Sign Language (BSL).

From Wednesday, 2 June, passengers can use ten touchscreens situated around the station to get up-to-date travel information in BSL. This number will be doubled to 20 by the end of the year. There will also be a large screen next to the arrivals and departures boards on the main concourse.

Network Rail invested 1.1 million GBP (1.28 million euros | 1.55 million USD) into the development of the software and the installation of the screens.

This accessibility improvement has been developed together with BSL company Clarion UK. Its interpreters have created a library of standard messages. However, its staff will also provide passengers with signed information during disruption events, to help passengers with hearing impairments get up-to-date information as situations evolve.

Messages can be turned into British Sign Language and uploaded directly to the screens using 4G within one hour.
