Services restored between Leeds and York after derailment

TRAINS are running again between Leeds and York via Church Fenton after an engineering train became derailed early yesterday, according to National Rail.

Rail passengers between the two cities had to travel via Harrogate after the incident in the small hours of yesterday morning in which five wagons of an engineering train left the rails. No one was injured, but track, points and signals were damaged.

Network Rail said work to recover the wagons and repair the track had continued overnight, but that the process had been made more complex by the fact that the wagons were carrying long sections of new rail.

Inspectors from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch have been gathering evidence at the scene.
