Alstom to Supply Twelve Additional Trams to Zurich

Alstom is set to supply 12 Flexity trams to Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ).

Building on the company’s initial order of 70 units in 2017, the additional 12 trams are part of an included option of a further 70 vehicles.

With more than 60 already in operation in Zurich; Alstom’s Flexity trams come equipped with an Obstacle Detection Assistance System (ODAS), which is capable of recognising any obstacle left along tracks throughout the area.

Marco Lüthi, Director of VBZ, said:

“We are replacing the older generation of Tram 2000 vehicles with the Flexity tram and are driving forward modernisation. Some of the vehicles will also be used to expand services in order to make public transport in Zurich even more attractive.”

To date, VBZ has ordered 52 optional trams, totalling 122 of a possible 140.

Marie Icardo, Managing Director of Alstom Switzerland, emphasises:

“The order shows that VBZ is very satisfied with our tram. The cooperation is excellent and the 60 Flexity trams deployed enrich the cityscape of Zurich.”

Alstom aims to complete the initial order of 70 trams by the beginning of 2025, with all additional units expected to be delivered by Spring 2028.
