First Electrical Lines Installed for South Wales Metro

Transport for Wales has installed the first electrical lines on the Core Valley Lines to power the new South Wales Metro.

This is a major milestone in the delivery of the South Wales Metro project that will provider faster, more frequent and more sustainable transport in South Wales.

The overhead line equipment (OLE) consists of metal posts and wires installed on 170 kilometres of track. The steel posts will be mounted on foundations spaced between 20 and 65 meters apart.

Leyton Powell, TfW Director of Safety and Sustainability said:

“Installation of the first electrical lines is a major step forward for us at TfW and once completed, this programme of works will provide greener transport for the future.”

The South Wales Metro will improve connectivity throughout South Wales and will connect to additional rail, bus and active travel routes.

This work has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.
