Amtrak Takes Up Option for 50 More Siemens Mobility Charger Locomotives

Amtrak has taken up the option to order a further 50 Charger locomotives from Siemens Mobility as it continues to replace its fleet of P40 and P42 diesel-electric locomotives with more energy efficient vehicles.

The initial order for 75 Charger locomotives, valued at 850 million USD (807.22m EUR), was made in 2018.

The total contract value is up to two billion USD (1.89bn EUR), and includes manufacture and multi-year maintenance support.

The Charger locomotive, also known as the ALC-42, was co-designed by the two organisations and is currently – according to its creators –  the most energy-efficient tier 4 passenger locomotive in the industry.

Compared to its predecessors, it reduces emissions of nitrogen oxide by over 89% and particulate matter by 95%, while consuming less fuel. It can also reach a greater top speed of 125 mph.

In order to comply with the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) ‘Buy America’ standard, Siemens Mobility is manufacturing the ALC-42s in Sacramento, California.

American supplier Cummins is manufacturing the diesel engines in Seymour, Indiana.

Albrecht Neumann, CEO of Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, said:

“The US is one of our most important markets and we are honoured to once again supply Amtrak and its passengers with the latest in sustainable and intelligent rail technology.

“Amtrak’s further investment illustrates America’s commitment to sustainable transportation that offers passengers a more sustainable option for travel.

“Our industry leading locomotives, built in the USA, will play an important role in reducing emissions and protecting the environment.”

The first ALC-42 entered service this February.

The ALC-42 was also the first locomotive to wear Amtrak’s newly unveiled livery in April.
