On 24 December, the main works to electrify the Midland Main Line between Kettering and Market Harborough – roughly 9 miles of double track – will begin.

The current plan is to subsequently continue the electrification of the MML up to Nottingham and Sheffield.

The Transport Secretary Grant Shapps visited the Leicester hub of Network Rail contractor SPL where he observed wiring gantries being manufactured for the project.
