DB Removes Bottleneck in Frankfurt

A second track on Homburger Damm north of Frankfurt’s city centre has been put into operation by Deutsche Bahn (DB).

This will bring an end to the bottleneck at Frankfurt Central Station by improving capacity.

The Homburger Damm infrastructure project included five kilometres of new railway line between Mainzer Landstrasse and the north side of Frankfurt Central Station, as well as 30 switches.

It cost approximately 180 million euros (203.15m USD), which was funded by DB and the federal government, and is the third commissioning from the joint programme ‘Frankfurt RheinMain plus’.

Long-distance trains will now use the southern area of the main station with regional traffic using the north side, while a new railway overpass ensures trains no longer have to wait for other traffic to enter or leave the main station.

This enables trains to run more punctually and reduce waiting times for passengers.
