To begin, Alstom will retrofit two BR423 and four BR430 prototype vehicles with ETCS Levels 2 and 3 and ATO GoA2 by the end of 2023. The contract further includes the delivery of the series equipment and the oversight of the installation in a further 58 BR423 and 151 BR430 trains. By January 2025 the retrofitted trains will run on the first lines equipped with ETCS Level 2. By the end of that same year, ETCS Level 2 operation with ATO GoA2 will start on the S-Bahn main line.

Once the ETCS signalling technology has been installed, the trains will gradually enter service in 2025 in time for the launch of the Stuttgart Digital Node – the first digital rail hub for all train categories in the country. Alstom already has a contract for the future upgrade to the next ETCS TSIs for 2026/27. Deutsche Bahn and Alstom are further working together to develop and implement additional signalling technologies.
