Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd has signed a contract to upgrade stations on the T3 Bankstown line between Sydenham and Bankstown to metro rail standards.

The Sydney Metro City & Southwest project consists of two parts: the Chatswood to Sydenham section, which involves the construction of a new metro line connecting to the Northwest section of Sydney Metro at Chatswood, and the Sydenham to Bankstown section, which will see the existing suburban rail line being upgraded to metro standard. The Bankstown Line is more than 125 years old.

Work is to start shortly at the stations Dulwich Hill, Campsie and Punchbowl. Downer EDI will

• upgrade and re-level the existing platforms to provide level access
• construct a new covered aerial footbridge with lifts and stairs at Dulwich Hill, connecting Bedford Crescent and Ewart Lane to the existing platform
• construct a new plaza at Dulwich Hill
• install new lifts at Punchbowl Station to connect the existing concourses to the platform level
• upgrade Campsie Station forecourt
• install accessible toilets at Dulwich Hill Station and Punchbowl Station
• paint, pave, tile and fit better lighting
• improve the security fencing by each station
• make improvements to interchanges such as bike parking, taxi spaces, kiss and ride, and accessible parking

Furthermore, Downer EDI will prepare the stations for the installation of platform screen doors. Their use on the Sydney Metro is the first time they are being used in Australia.

Metro services on the upgraded Bankstown Line are to begin in 2024 with trains every four minutes in each direction at peak times. Some stations on the line currently only have four trains an hour.
