Bombardier delivered the TWINDEXX coaches to Israel between 2002 and 2006. These first-generation coaches will be given modern internal and external doors and new passenger information systems and jumper cables. The project recently got off the ground with design and engineering works. Next one train pilot train will be equipped. Bombardier is aiming to complete the project in full by January 2023.

The mid-life project is a step in the six-year retrofit programme for these TWINDEXX coaches. Bombardier Transportation and Israel Railways have recently implemented the necessary technical work packages to prepare the fleet for electric operation, including the installation of magnetic track brakes to allow the trains to travel at speeds of 160km/h. Additional diagnostics and safety systems have also been installed.

In full the project will deliver the following:

  • the overhaul and modernisation of the exterior door system
  • the overhaul of the toilet doors to make them more accessible
  • the replacement of the 400V jumper cables
  • the renewal of the passenger information system
