Construction of Uttar Pradesh line approved

INDIA: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the construction of an 81 km line between Sahjanwa and Dohrighat in Uttar Pradesh.

The government said the railway would support socio-economic development in the economically underdeveloped area, which is densely populated but lacks roads.

Conversion of the existing Indara – Dohrighat line from metre to broad gauge has previously been approved, and the Ministry of Railways said building the missing link between Dohrighat and Sahjanwa would provide an alternate route between Chhapra and Lucknow which would avoid congestion in Gorakhpur.

The work is to be undertaken by North Eastern Railway’s construction organisation, with completion planned by 2024 at a cost of Rs13·2bn.

  • The cabinet has also approved the provision of a third track to increase capacity on the 150 km route between Allahabad and Mughalsarai by 2024. This work is to be undertaken by North Central Railway’s construction organisation at a cost of Rs26·5bn.
